At Sparkenhoe Karate, we believe in the traditional values of the art of karate, Respect and Discipline.  Using teaching methods handed down and refined through generations of karate masters, students progress when they are ready and are fully supported by the instructor. As a member of the Traditional Martial Arts Federation the club is fully insured with instructors in continuos training and are of a high standard.

Established in 1999, Sparkenhoe Karate Club lies in the heart of Leicester and only a short walk from the city rail stationmap.  We have high quality mats, and two types of striking shields (one child's and one adults), all of which allow for safer training.

The club solely teaches Shotokan karate, one of the more traditional styles, and is a member of Kazoku Kai Shotokan International, part of the Traditional Martial Arts Federation. Unlike some other clubs, ours operates with core values which offer the best value for money teaching with payment on a lesson by lesson basis.

The Club

Core Values

Progression

Students are encouraged to progress when they are ready and not when the next grading happens to be. Although there are limits as to how fast a student can move though the grading system, no student is forced to take a grading they are not ready for.  All our students must meet the high standards set by external examiners. These examiners provide impartial evaluation of the students ability and the club as a whole.

Value for Money

Lessons are paid on arrival, with no monthly or hidden charges. A suit is needed for the first grading (typically after 2 months) along with a licence to remain within teaching guidelines.  There is no joining fee and no charge for non-attendance.

Respect

Although a friendly club, a high level of respect is maintained, towards the instructor and other students. Throughout training, advice is given from the instructor as to how to best use karate and to know what harm the techniques can cause.  Students learn respect for others and responsibility with their new found skills.

Traditional Teachings

Shotokan karate is a classical style.  Using methods handed down though generations and combined into a single style by its founder Gichin Funakoshi and further developed by his son Gigo Funakoshi and more recently Taiji Kase.  There is no mixing of other styles or other self-defence methods. This results in a style that is tried and tested for many years and monitored through external bodies.
